i went to new caledonia with my french class too, also when i was 15!
you're quite right, it was absolutely not what i expected. very industrial but still beautiful, i had the best time!
except for the days when we went to the french language school, creipac... ugh.
phare amedee was the only place that i found to be the stereotypical 'tropical island'.
